Recipe Architects Ltd trading as TReat of East London, is a collection of locally sourced, organically produced, lovingly baked, hand made ‘healthy gluten free’ foods, produced by Farzana and her team in East London.
In 2007 whilst working as an Architect, Farzana discovered she was unable to eat many of the staple foods that we have all grown up with that adorn the shelves of our supermarkets today. Meanwhile the anticipation of the after effects of lunch and dinner became the source of constant anxiety.
This was the beginning of a journey of self discovery through food and the way food changes our lives.
The food our forefathers ate was very different to the quality and purity of the food that most people eat today. Each square foot of land is expected to yield far more produce then it did decades before, so how could this be naturally done? The reality is it can’t and thus the advent of genetically modified foods that have now replaced what was once natural. Whilst the initial costs might seem low the real price is paid for by our health , with illnesses such as gluten intolerances and the effects on the environment.
Farzana realised that in order to stay healthy she had to look at what she could eat, what was readily available and how it tasted.
Farzana felt that food restrictions, such as cutting out cakes , biscuits and breads amongst other things would reduce the quality of her life, something she was not willing to give up.
It was clear that there was little of good quality available to gluten intolerant sufferers. The gluten free products in the supermarkets were saturated with unhealthy flours, starches, fats and chemicals, which disguised an otherwise tasteless, often dry, textureless collection of chemical ingredients.
The next 4 years was spent obsessively combining fresh ingredients , sourcing healthy fats, blending , baking and preparing subtle combinations of healthy recipes with delicate tastes.
Meanwhile the nights were dedicated to spending time with gluten free user groups, learning through the experiences of hundreds of others.
Farzana realised that putting together a ‘healthy gluten free’ range of foods that gives pleasure to the palette whilst being kind to the stomach and championing good health was a passion worth dedicating the rest of her energies to.
As the business and demand has grown, she has introduced a new partner, Smita, into the business domain. Together with their knowledge, and determination, they have raised their profile using social media, attended fairs and listened to the needs of their customers. They can be found in Wanstead Market (first Sunday of every month) selling their delicious range of goodies and showcasing their new ideas to the community. They hope to continue to develop and share this incredible journey with you all.
